If you’re new to hair care, I know you’ve asked yourself the when and how often should you moisturize your hair question. On today’s post we talk about that and a few more moisturizing tips.

Feel like your hair has been the same length forever, I’ve an Ebook that will help you grow your hair healthier, longer and thicker. Grab your copy here… Also, check out all the Ebooks, guides and journals that will go a long way in your hair care journey here.

You can’t achieve healthy hair without moisturizing. Dry hair is prone to split ends, dull look, breakage and it never looks good on anyone. Moisturizing keeps your hair soft and manageable, gives shine, defines curls and minimizes breakage.

When to Moisturize hair and how often should you moisturize hair

When Should you Moisturize hair.

When and how often should you moisturize depends on your porosity, moisturizing product you’re using, the weather and how coarse/ fine your hair is. Before moisturizing or purchasing a moisturizing product, you ought to know which porosity type is your hair.

Always moisturize on wash day immediately after rinsing off the deep conditioner for maximum moisture retention. After rinsing off the deep conditioner, use a microfiber towel to absorb excess water then apply your moisturizing products on damp hair.

Make a point to moisturize before installing any protective style, styling your hair and before running fingers, comb or brush through your hair. This minimizes breakage and helps melt away the tangles before styling.

Have a fun outdoor activity? Well, moisturize before stepping out. Actually, moisturize before leaving your house if your hair needs it.

How often should you moisturize? I’ll say as often as your hair needs. Always pay a close attention to how long your hair retains moisture this will help keep your hair moisturized and not over-moisturized. I moisturize weekly when rocking natural hair twists and when wearing my hair out, I moisturize mid-week too.

Major causes of dry hair.

  • Using clarifying shampoo very often.
  • Using the wrong moisturizing products for your hair.
  • Not moisturizing at all
  • Not covering your hair with satin or silk bonnet/ scarf when sleeping.

Why should you moisturize.

Moisturizing is essential if you wanna keep your hair healthy, flourishing and retain length. If healthy and long hair is your goal, you ought to moisturize your hair as needed and use the moisturizing product that your hair loves.

Moisturizing minimizes tangles and breakage which can be a pain and cause hair stagnation because you aren’t retaining length from your growth. If you want those defined curls and add some shine to your hair, moisturize.

How to moisturize.

Moisturizing starts with a moisturizing deep conditioner which you should always use after cleansing your hair. After rinsing off the moisturizing deep conditioner, moisturize with your go to leave-in conditioner. My go to leave-in conditioner is African pride moisture miracle coconut oil and baobab oil leave-in conditioner.

Apply the leave-in conditioner on damp hair then lock in the moisture with a butter or oil if needed. For the last couple of months, I have not used any sealants, I only apply African pride moisture miracle leave-in and I’m good to go.
