If you have curly, kinky natural hair, you may struggle to get your curls to pop and hold. While some of us are blessed with defined curls, others have to do lots of trial and error to get there. I was there once, little to zero curls, I wouldn’t ever achieve a defined twist out.

Top reasons why your natural hair curls don’t hold or pop.
Insufficient Moisture.
Curly hair can be dry and a little difficult to retain moisture especially if you don’t know your porosity type or haven’t figured out how to moisturize your porosity type. Without moisture or enough moisture, your curls may become frizzy and lose their definition. Keep your hair moisturized and don’t skip deep conditioning. To keep your curls defined and hydrated, use a water based leave-in conditioner to moisturize and an oil to lock in moisture and keep your curls defined.

Wrong Products
Using wrong products for your hair type could be another reason why your curls don’t pop and hold. The best products are those that give you moisture retention and activate your curl pattern. Look for products that are specifically formulated for your hair’s texture and porosity type that will give moisture and define your curls.

Too much Products
I know some of us think using too much products will give us the moisture, retain it and help define our curls, but do they though? Too much products and using a lot of heavy products will weigh your hair instead of giving you the curl definition you deserve. Less of the right products will go a long way.
Other than using the right products, consider wearing styles that will activate the curls. Styles like braids, two strand Twists, bantu knots, flat twists and so on. Also consider using curl defining creams and moisturize your hair when in its damp or wet state.
