Lesson 9 from my 7 year Natural Hair Journey: Do I Have to Trim My Natural Hair?

Let me start by saying, I’m not my hair or so attached to it but trimming it every 3-6 months according to Google content, did sound excessive to me. I mean, is it really necessary?

Hello girlies, how’s your natural hair doing? I hope your hair is growing and skin glowing. I am over here loving to see my hair grow after a big chop in March, it’s really doing the most with growth and length retention.

Why do I need trim my hair every few months?

When I started my natural hair journey, I didn’t know split and damaged hair ends were an actual issue. I think that was because I always wore my hair straight and when it wasn’t, it was in braids that were installed after straightening. I know some of you can relate.

I learned about straightening when doing research on healthy hair care practices, that’s when I found out about split ends, single strand knots and tangles. All vocabularies but I was determined to do the natural hair care thing right.

So, why did I need to trim every few months? Because hair ends are the oldest part of the hair that have gone through a lot of manipulation ending up being split, damaged, fragile and susceptible to knots, tangles and worse breakage. Then is when I noticed that the ends looked thinner and felt lighter than the rest of the hair.

I noticed too as I transitioned to natural hair that the ends of my hair would tangle a lot then single strand knots came and that’s when I realized that may be just may be trimming is essential every once in a while or when you notice damage and single strand knots on your hair ends.

How did/do I Trim my Natural Hair and How Often Do I Trim?

I had my first trim I think a year into my transitioning, I had a little heat damage on my ends which wasn’t that noticeable. I didn’t stretch or straighten my hair for the first trim, all I did was install braids and then trimmed the ends. Honestly, the trim was trial and error, wasn’t sure at what length I was supposed to trim but I did trim though.

I didn’t have a timeline for trimming, I would trim anytime I noticed single strand knots and split ends. To date I don’t have a trimming timeline, I have seen some naturals swear by trimming every 3 months and others 6 months which works for them. My advice is to do what works best for your natural hair.

I still trim my hair when wearing braids or twists, I’ve only trimmed when my hair is straight two years after transitioning. Well, it wasn’t really a trim but a big chop because I was really struggling with caring for the long hair and thought shorter hair was easier to manage since I was still learning on proper natural hair care.
