Hair Updates: What have I been up to.

Well, not quite a lot. I mean once you establish a hair routine, length retention styles that work for you as well as the products, nothing much happens other than getting adventurous with styling which your girl here doesn’t. Once I find what works best, I just stick to it and keep moving. My routine was basically monthly washes, either wear mini braids, mini twists or medium size twists for three weeks and the last week I rock that twist out or braid out, then wash day and repeat. Here is a list of posts that I think will be helpful:

The plot twist.

I don’t know if you guys have seen the meme video of a guy saying, “just do it for the plot, do it for the plot, your life has been boring, just do what you’ve been thinking of doing, just for the plot.” Well, I took his advice and did it for the plot. What did I do? A big chop. Very unplanned, very refreshing and very demure {i had to force it there}.

Honestly, I felt like a heavy burden had been lifted off my whole body, you know that feeling you get once you let go of something you’ve been holding on to, that was the feeling. A deep breath out, you would thinking I had been holding my breathe.

I had been thinking of either having a big chop or locking my hair for quite some time, probably last 3 years but I just couldn’t get around it.

I kept postponing it, then realized along the way I hate having my hair plaited for long periods of time and I love styles I can take out the minute I feel like I want my Afro free which natural locs don’t and in my research, I found out that they can take up to a year to completely lock. Who has the patience to wait for them to lock? Definitely not me. That’s how dreadlocks were out of the picture and was left with the big chop which happened some time in March this year.

On the big chop day, I woke up with a burning, flaming hot urge to cut my hair. I didn’t even take a minute to question and overthink it. PS I’m a full blown overthinker, I will overthink even the tinniest of things. Searched for my pair of scissors, held my hair in side buns and the hair cut began, kept cutting it off till I was satisfied with the length. It felt so good which in retrospect I find really weird because I enjoyed and loved my long and full hair, I think it was about time for the hair cut.

Loving the short hair more mostly because it is so low maintenance. Did I mention that I’m yet to visit the barber for an even trim because some parts are longer than others. I don’t know if people can tell but I know I can tell it isn’t even and the best part is I’m getting compliments on how pretty and full my hair is which is a win for your girl.

Short Hair Lately.

First, right now it feels like it isn’t short enough or rather as short I wanted it to. And also, I feel like it’s growing faster than I want it to. I know we all love fast hair growth, but not this girl, not now. The hair feels like it growing faster, also realized I can wear mini twists though they look really funny and weird, probably because I was used to the long and full twists. The best is I took less than 30 minutes to install the mini twists, curlies, I love it here.

What I’m currently loving about short hair.

The short wash days, they’ve got really really short, a couple of minutes and it’s a wrap. You can have a wash and go in the morning and get to work right on time. I love that its very low maintenance, I don’t have to worry about installing chunky twists or flat twists right before bed, all I need is a bonnet and my satin pillowcase and I’m sorted for the night. Also loving that I am using way less hair products, guys short hair is very economical lol. I feel like I made a wise money decision, please invite me for the next money talk camp.

Ooh and it isn’t tangling as much as my longer hair used to, I really hated detangling, still does. Detangling is my least favorite part of my hair routine, separating the knots, feeling like the shed hair and hair breakage is too much and quite unnecessary but we keep moving. Incase you are curious, my favorite part of the hair routine is having clean, deep conditioned, moisturized hair with mini twists already installed and all I have to do is moisturize and style the mini twists.

Short hair lately, the current afro length

I’m not loving this about short hair.

My Pinterest algorithm right now is all about short afro styles and I just realized for someone who is a minimalist when it comes to hairstyling, I’m limited to just combing out my afro and going about my day. Out here switching up between combed out afro and frohawk hoping to find more minimalist easy to do hairstyles. If you have any recommendations, lets meet in the comment section, help a sister out.

Detangling short hair for me is actually laughable, like how am I supposed to do it? The hair is too short; the ends and roots are just at the same place lol. The best part is I can skip detangling before cleansing and do it when applying the deep conditioner or when moisturizing right after rinsing off the deep conditioner. That’s all that I’m currently figuring out and struggling with but overall, it is an amazing experience, highly recommend you get that hair cut you’ve been thinking about.

Changes in Hair Routine.

Nothing much has changed other than the plan to get back to having wash days twice a month like I used to when I started my natural hair journey. This is because, I noticed product build up on my wash day after a month of wearing my short hair. The buildup is as a result of moisturizing my hair every other day or daily depending on how it feels since I’m wearing it out daily compared to when my hair lived in mini twists. Protective styles hold moisture longer compared to when wearing your hair out.

That’s all for now on the hair update, keep it here for more on my natural hair journey. Currently using products from Risha naturals, be sure to check them out, I highly recommend. I will try my best to document as much as possible especially on hairstyling. Side note; The other day before I decided to just comb out my Afro and step out, I checked out this post I did on hairstyles for short hair. Girlies, I never thought I would part of my blog’s audience but here I am. Hope to see you all in the next post.
