Lesson 2 from my 7 Years' Natural Hair Journey.

7 Years Natural Hair Journey Lesson 2: It’s all trial and error.

I know when we get into the natural hair journey, we expect to nail it, have the tips and products work on our hair at the first trial because they seem to work for everyone else. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my case and I bet it wasn’t for most naturals, it takes trial and error to get there.

I thought that leave in conditioner that promises curl definition and soft hair would work magic on my hair only to find out, my hair doesn’t feel as soft, and where are the curls and coils it was supposed to give me? If this is you, don’t give up just yet, get to know your hair’s porosity for a start and give the product sometime.

Sometimes, you will give the product a chance but won’t work for your hair or rather the way you would want it too. I’ve learned to just let go of the product and try the next one and eventually, you’ll find a product that will work just perfectly. When it comes to getting those curls and coils defined, you may need to use other methods to activate.

I know when starting your natural hair journey, you expect that curl defining cream to give you the most defined coils and curls but it doesn’t offer that, don’t give up just yet. You got to go an extra mile to get the definition and that’s by using methods like twisting your hair, braiding, using Flexi rods, flat twists or finger coils. Use the defining cream when installing these styles and make sure your hair is dry before unravelling. For faster drying use a hair dryer with a diffuser, thank me later. catch up on one of my posts on ways to achieve curly hair.

When it comes to trial and error, discovering, learning and unlearning, I’ve done a couple of stuff like:

  • Doing hot oil treatments as a prepoo and deep conditioner. Loved both but using as prepoo is my faves
  • Jumped into the rice water bandwagon, and yes, I noticed the length retention and increase.
  • Skipped deep conditioning and that was a terrible mistake. My hair felt dry and noticed lots of tangles.
  • Did mini twists length retention challenge for a couple of months and it was a success. Check it here.
  • Heating up deep conditioner before application. This was a game changer girlies. Saved me time, infused smoothly in my strands and my hair felt soft in a very short time
  • Not using oils as a sealant. I had a season where I didn’t use oils as a sealant and my hair was flourishing still, felt way better than when I was using oils as sealant. I documented it here.
  • Tried the African’s pride moisture miracle leave-in conditioner which was in my bucket list, my hair loved it. Read my review here.
  • Last but not least, authored some guides to help girlies like yourself have a smooth start and progress in your natural hair journey. Did I mention a journal to document every step of the way? Find them here.

And finally, got a huge, thick and gorgeous bun. Styled my twist out into a bun

As we close up today’s post, the lesson is don’t be afraid to try and fail. If you have tried a couple of things and they failed, trust me, it gets better. I’ve been there myself and I promise you, you’ll one day look back and be proud you didn’t give up. Don’t give up, keep trying.
