What’s Co-Washing?

Co-washing simply means washing your hair with conditioner only, you replace the shampoo with a conditioner. Co-washing is referred to as the no-poo method(no shampoo). Which conditioner you ask? Rinse-off conditioner but there are co-wash products in the market today.

Before we dive into co-washing details, keep in mind that the conditioner’s job is to restore moisture not to cleanse. So, conditioners will lightly cleanse and shouldn’t be used as the sole means of cleansing.

Have you checked our payhip store,  we have an offer, once you purchase any guide, planner, growth and beginner’s ebook, get your copy here.

Co-washing without deep cleansing will clog the hair follicles and cause product build-up.

Who shouldn’t co-wash?

⦁ Anyone with scalp conditions or experience build up.

⦁ Uses products with heavy oils & silicones daily

⦁ Exposed to dirt and dust daily- you can co-wash midweek then shampoo cleanse at the end of the week or protect your hair from dirt & dust

⦁ Dry and damaged hair can benefit from co-washing but you’ll still need some shampoo cleansing in between.

Co-wash products to use

A basic or your usual conditioner can do the job but since there are co-wash products you can try them out. When purchasing co-wash products, check the ingredients list for humectants(honey, glycerin), Emollients & moisturizers.

10 Best Co-washes & Cleansing conditioners for Natural Hair

How to Co-wash

⦁ Saturate your hair with water

⦁ Squeeze a healthy amount of conditioner like a lot, remember cleansing isn’t conditioner’s job

⦁ Massage into the scalp to break down dirt and products, coat your strands too

⦁ Rinse off and apply your moisturizer of choice or rather moisturize your hair

⦁ Use a clarifying shampoo in between co-washes to get rid of all the build up

Don’t solely depend on co-washes to cleanse your hair, use a shampoo when you notice build-up, super oily strands and dull hair. I did try co-washing my mini twists once, catch up here.
