Personally, am not a fan of styling gels since I don’t wear wash and gos, sleek down styles or lay my edges. Have used a gel , mikalla gel before on my high puff and loved it. The only thing I didn’t love is how hard and stiff my hair would feel but the hold was perfect.

Choosing the best styling hair gel

What to Consider When Choosing Hair Gels.

Ingredients: Opt for styling gels formulated with natural ingredients like aloe vera gel, flaxseed extract and shea butter. Natural oils, humectants are fantastic choices for hydrating and nourishing natural hair. Avoid products containing harsh chemicals such as sulfates, parabens and the drying alcohols which can strip moisture from your hair causing dryness and breakage.

Hold Strength: Consider the level of hold you need for your hairstyle. If you prefer a soft hold for everyday styling, choose a lightweight gel. For more elaborate styles or longer-lasting hold, opt for a stronger hold gel.

Moisture Content: Look for styling gels that offer hydration and moisture to prevent dryness and brittleness in your 4C hair. Gels infused with moisturizing agents like glycerin and aloe vera can help retain moisture and keep your curls defined and manageable.

Residue: Avoid gels that leave behind a sticky or flaky residue, as this can weigh down your hair and cause buildup over time. Look for products that provide a smooth finish without compromising on hold.

How to Incorporate Gels in Your Hair Routine.

Curl definition and hold for wash and gos

Gels give definition and more hold than some curl defining creams. Using gels will have your curls defined for longer. The downside to this is your hair may feel hard and stiff, that’s why choosing a styling gels with natural and moisturizing ingredients is advised.

For Slick Back Styles, Puffs and Buns

For slick back styles without flyaways and frizz, use styling gels to hold your hair in place. You can still use styling gels on your high puffs and buns. You ought to be careful with these styles, don’t hold them too tight this causes tension on your scalp and may cause alopecia. Also smothering gels for days may clog your follicles altering growth and cause product build-up too.

Laying Edges

Who doesn’t love some nicely laid edges? They give a nice finish to your hairstyles. Use styling gels or edge control gels to lay your edges. Use gels that are moisturizing and stay away from gels with drying alcohols.
