Hygral fatigue: Can you Over Moisturize your Hair?

We focus much on moisturizing and keeping our hair moisturized for longer but can we over moisturize our hair?

Is over moisturizing a thing? Yes it is and it’s referred to as hygral fatigue. Hygral fatigue happens when there is a moisture-protein imbalance. Did you know you can also experience protein overload from too much protein?

We experience hygral fatigue due to constant swelling and deswelling of the cuticle as a result of water entering and leaving the shaft. Is hygral fatigue permanent? No, it can be fixed. Read on.

What causes of hygral fatigue 

  • Over Conditioning- moisturizing deep conditioners are essential until you over condition. Over Conditioning happens when you keep conditioning overnight and/or using only moisturizing deep conditioners without protein treatments which are essential for hair structure and strength.
  • Baggy moisturizing method– don’t know what it is? Read about it here. It’s an awesome moisturizing method until you overdo it & wake up with wet hair daily 
  • Keeping your hair wet for long/always moisturizing. Moisturized hair doesn’t mean damp or wet hair.

Signs of hygral fatigue.

  • Hair lacks elasticity/ bounce- when you stretch it, it doesn’t bounce back.
  • Hair loses its curl pattern.
  • Hair looks lifeless and dull- you will notice less shine and volume.
  • The hair feels too soft, frizzy and looks like you’re experiencing product build up.

Preventing & Reverting hygral fatigue.

  • Incorporate protein treatments in your hair care regimen to restore the moisture protein balance.
  • Pre-poo with penetrating oils like olive, coconut, jojoba oils to reduce the swelling of the cuticle.
  • Don’t leave the deep conditioner longer than the recommended time.
  • Don’t re-wet your hair before it is completely dry.
  • Don’t wash your hair too often.
