My Natural Hair Journey.

They all label their story ‘going natural’ but mine is embracing my natural hair. My hatred for heat and salon dates got me embracing my kinks, the pulling, the nail scratching during washing and sitting for hours during braiding. I just dreaded salon dates big time.

I just woke up one day and decided to stay off salons, figure out how to care for my mane by myself without cutting an inch of it. Weird enough I wasn’t updated on the natural hair community or know of anyone embracing their natural hair so I had to do the research.

Researching was hella hectic, too much info that I couldn’t wrap my head around it and the products were either international based or Kenya based and expensive

I decided am going to start with what I had at the time(Afro comb, wide-toothed comb, nice and lovely avocado oil, laundry bar soap as my shampoo and coconut oil(which I didn’t own BTW it was my bestie’s I would borrow cause I realized my hair loved it).

Everything I had worked out for my hair probably because I couldn’t afford to buy all those products. As you start embracing your curls, kinks don’t stress much about the products and what not, begin your journey with the products you have or can afford as you learn and unlearn stuff about your hair.

Transitioning to Natural hair / my 4c Natural Hair journey

My first product to purchase was a leave-in conditioner. I would always wet my hair like dripping wet wrap a towel to absorb some of the water then once damp I would seal with an oil until I learnt about hydrating/moisturizing conditioners.

Learnt moisturizing is all about spritzing your hair with water, add moisture boosting conditioner like Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner, design essentials leave-in, tgin butter cream daily moisturizer and seal with an oil and my hair was always super soft. That’s when my mind was fully made up am in this for the long haul.

I know shrinkage is a sign of healthy hair but how am I supposed to show off my long mane? Over time I learnt to love my shrunken Afro, shorter twists and twist outs. Appreciate your hair in every state.

Some days you will have the perfect twist outs some days frizz will have you not feeling your mane and the wind will give you all sorts of tangles and styles you didn’t create but you got to learn to switch up the bad to good.

One thing this journey has taught me is patience and the art of learning and unlearning what you knew and the fact that I will keep purchasing bobby pins and hair headbands cause of a ghost that seems to need them more than I do.

Have learnt not to compare my hair and not all products will work on my hair. Find what works best for your hair and stick to it and if you are the adventurous kind, do you boo.

Four years later and my hair is still thriving, with a few big chops, hated and loved it in equal measures and still on this journey to waist length. Had to start this blog to record my hair journey, inspire ladies to embrace their manes, share ideas, experiences, easy your hair journeys and love on our beauty hair. Welcome to my journey and let’s share our experiences, ideas and so on.

When I started my natural hair journey, all I could see was very many products( especially with youtube naturalistas) and lots of content that was almost overwhelming. However, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one trying to grow and wear my natural mane out.
