Butters and oils are essential products that ought to be in your hair regimen to keep the moisture locked in, nourish the hair and scalp, stimulate growth, strengthen the hair and restore hair’s natural shine.

Which should you use for your hair? Either or both depending on how you intend to use the sealant and your porosity type. If you have high porosity hair, you might want to use butters to keep the moisture locked in because they heavier than oils while for low porosity hair light oils will do.

Butters vs Oils, which is the best?

BUTTERS.

Butters are a blend of organic oils like olive, almond, jojoba, coconut, karkar and unrefined butters like Shea, mango, cocoa. They are heavier than oils and perfect for thicker and coarse hair. Personally, I prefer butters to oils because they keep moisture locked in for longer than oils.

You can also make your own butter, infuse your go to herbs and oils. There are hundreds of tutorials on formulating hair butters and other hair care products.

Benefits of using butter.

  • Lock in moisture after moisturizing. Apply your go to leave-in conditioner then follow up with a butter.
  • Nourish the hair and scalp.
  • Can be used to style the hair and define curls.
  • Some butters have ingredients that strengthen the hair minimizing breakage and split ends.
  • Combat frizz and restore natural shine.

The benefits are endless, it all goes down to the ingredients in the butter. So, the next time you’re buying a butter, google how your hair benefits from each of the ingredients.

When applying butter on your scalp be cautious to avoid causing build up on your scalp which will have your scalp itching like crazy. Just use enough for your hair, scalp and as often as needed. I do have a hair butter; Rovie Care soft and seal chebe butter that have been using for sometime now, check out the review here and our socials to purchase one for your beautiful hair.

OILS

Oils are also amazing sealants, perfect for pre-poo treatment, hot oil treatment and scalp massages. We have a lot of oils out here from olive, castor, rosemary, tea tree oil, ayurveda infused oils, jojoba, almond etc. Oils are classified as either essential or carrier oils, check the differences here.

I don’t use oils as much as I used to, I only use to pre-poo when I decide to or for scalp massages. Check out how I make my DIY rosemary and hibisccus infused oil here.

Benefits

Each oil has its benefits from stimulating growth, increasing hair shine, healing itchy scalp and dandruff, strengthening the hair etc. When purchasing an oil, check out how your hair benefits from the oil.

  • Lock in the moisture keeping your hair moisturized and easy to manage.
  • Increases and restores hair’s natural shine.
  • Strengthens the hair.
  • Soothes itchy scalp and dandruff.
  • Nourishes the hair and scalp.
  • Help stimulate growth.
  • Strengthens and softens the hair.

Other than my DIY oil, I love castor oil especially for scalp massages.

Butters vs Oils for Natural Hair

How to use oils on your hair.

  • As a sealant, once you moisturize your hair, keep the moisture locked in by applying an oil.
  • Pre-shampoo treatment to minimize the stripping effect of cleansers/shampoo.
  • Hot oil treatment to nourish the hair and scalp.
  • Scalp massages to stimulate growth.

Which is the best between a butter and an oil? The best is which works best for your hair and meets your hair needs.

Are you a butter, an oil or both person? I’m lately a butter person.
